Our Story
Orlando Sewcial started with a few friends who met regularly for an afternoon of sewing, sharing their life experiences and, of course, a good cup of tea and snacks! Over time, we saw the benefits of this wonderful hobby in our lives. Sewing is a great way to keep our brains engaged. Reading and figuring out patterns, calculating measurements, estimating fabric, all these skills start those mental wheels turning. Sewing is also an incredible way to be creative. With gorgeous colors and textures to play with, and amazing new technologies in notions, machines, and computer programming -- the sky is the limit! Most importantly, we loved the bonding that happened during those afternoons of sharing our joys when we accomplished our goal and commiserating when we messed up the project and had to rip out all the stitches and sew it all over again. Whether we cut the fabric wrong or sewed a button hole for the first time, the memory of sharing that moment with friends made it special!
Some time after the sewing group grew, we had some friends who said that they their passion was knitting and crocheting, so Wool Power came into existence! These friends found a bond through yarn that got them excited about community projects and helping others learn their craft! Knitting and crocheting require a great amount of patience and dexterity. Math, of course, is woven into all aspects of life, especially in knitting. At times, there is a certain level of hubbub in the group with people chatting and laughing, and all of a sudden, a peaceful moment where everyone is intently engaged, counting their stitches!
